How much loose tea should I use to make a cup of tea?
As a rule of thumb, 1 pound of loose tea will make around 200 cups however this does vary with the variety and amounts you
use per cup.
You can brew a pot of tea (~ 1 qt) with 1 to 1 1/2 heaped teaspoons of tea. Very large leaf teas like Oolongs, may need a little more and tightly rolled teas like ‘Gunpowder’ Green Tea may need less. Again, if cream or milk is to be added, double the amount of tea leaves. Use the following chart as a guideline and adjust to taste.

Herbal "tea" |
Start with 1 tsp. (1 gm), and increase to desired taste. |
White and Oolong have a more delicate flavor than do Green or Black. Consequently we suggest 2 tsp. instead of 1 tsp. but adjust quantities to fit your desired tastes.
For best results always use bottled, filtered or purified water since good quality water and proper brewing time are essential for a flavorful cup of tea.
- Use fresh cold water. In areas with poor tap water, use bottled or filtered water. We do not recommmend water from the hot water tap. Let the tap water run for a few seconds until it is cold to ensures that the water is aerated (full of oxygen) to release the full flavor of the tea leaves.
- Place recommended amount of tea into your teapot.
- Rinse your tea by pouring 1/2 cup of hot water over the leaves then immediately pouring it out of the pot
- Heat water to recommended temperature (see Tea Brewing Table)
- Add water within the suggested temperature range and allow tea to brew (steep) for the suggested amount of time.
- Serve and enjoy your tea

(If tea leaves remain in the pot too long, the tea may get stronger and bitter. Remember; flavor comes out first and tannins, next. Excessive tannins make the tea taste bitter.)
